My Journey

How it all started:
I joined the Leading Edge Triathlon Club in January of 2007. It was a year and a half after graduating from UBC in Applied Sciences and working full-time for a super great medical device company as a mechanical engineer (Evasc). I wanted to try something out ...

I joined the triathlon club because I wanted to learn more about the sport of triathlon, have fun training with other people, but deep down I kind of wanted to try going for something else …. I had a really big, almost seemingly unrealistic, goal. I not only wanted to give triathlons a try, but I wanted to see if I could compete at a really high level!

Background:
I love sports (in general)! I’m not sure if its cause I grew up with two older brothers who often ‘used’ me as a guinea pig for a goalie or catcher or a 5th person, but I’ve always enjoyed being active and fit, trying new activities, and the challenge of pushing my limits. So, I’ve tried and/or played almost every sport I’ve come close to…

I ended up focusing on swimming for most of my high school and university days and got to a National Level. I did ok, but I never got as far as I really wanted to. I trained and competed as a pure sprinter. I raced the 50m free, sometimes 100m free and 100 fly, but never 200m or more … I stayed as far as I could from distance swimming. So, yes the long-distance swim is still not a ‘breeze’ and super ‘fun’ for me either ;)

After swimming I wanted to stay fit and started running more and really enjoyed it. I did some 10km races, half marathons and one marathon (barely!) for fun. I ‘trained’ for fun and always put in my best effort at races, but by no means was I one of those super skinny, fast runners :P

So having enjoyed swimming and running I decided to give triathlons a try. I did a few races for fun and absolutely loved them. I wasn’t super fast or anything, but I really enjoyed the challenge of doing three sports for one finish.

Goal:

Is simple. I want to be an international elite level triathlete while pursuing a career, as I am passionate for both. I really do love my job and the challenges that comes with pushing innovation in the medical industry and the sense of contribution to society. But I also love competing and pushing my limits in triathlons. So, why not pursue both, physical and mental lmits? 100% in both :-)

Belief:
Like I said, I am still fairly new to the sport of triathlon and I know that what I am pursuing is going to be really tough. I will have to be patient and slowly develop the skills and experience in order to get me where I want to, but I strongly believe that when I put my mind to something I can and I will achieve it … and that is what keeps me going :)

This is my journey on passion, balance and lifestyle ...
